South Luangwa National Park:Walking Safari - Norman Carr Trail10 days and 9 nights on a walking safari with Norman Carr Safaris Day 1 Arrive Mfuwe, drive to Kapani Lodge; Kapani Safari Lodge A thatched building in the centre of camp houses the lounge and library. It is pleasantly cool in the hot weather and warm and cozy in the cooler months with an open fire. The bar and dining area overlooks the beautiful Kapani Lagoon where there is plenty of space for guests to relax between game drives and watch the many hippos and crocs in the lagoon. We have a telescope on the deck for guests to spot the countless species of birds and animals. According to the season, dining is al fresco with dinner taken on the terrace, on the spacious deck overlooking the lagoon, by the swimming pool or in the lounge. Romantic, private candlelit dinners can also be arranged. We have a small gift shop offering books and local crafts as well as a secluded swimming pool at the far end of camp. Kapani means – place of mopane trees. You could spend the first day or 2 of your safari here - the activities are mostly game drives and night drives - the best opportunity for spotting leopards. Day 2 - 4 Game drive to - Luwi Bush camp. Luwi Bush Camp Luwi camp consists of 4 thatched bamboo chalets set in a beautifully shady grove of trees on the banks of the Luwi sand river. The rooms are simple yet extremely comfortable with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. There is a hippo filled lagoon close by and walking safaris from camp usually finish with sundowners there, watching the sunset over a landscape unchanged for thousands of years. Brunch is taken in the shade of a huge old tree and dinner under the stars. The Luwi area is famous for its lions and the thrill of tracking them on foot is an experience not to be missed. Luwi is a walking camp - the area is excellent for lions - most nights lions call around camp and early mornings are often spent tracking them on foot (with a highly experienced guide and armed scout of course!) Day 4 - 6 Walk to Nsolo camp. Nsolo Bush Camp Nsolo has 4 spacious open sided thatched chalets built on raised wooden decks with reed walls and en-suite bathrooms. Each chalet is set under the shade of large evergreen trees with private verandahs overlooking the surrounding bush. There is a chitenje with bar and dining offering a peaceful refuge where guests can study the camps collection of books or view a variety of game at the waterhole. Nsolo is the local name for the honey guide and the camp was named after this extraordinary little bird. By amazing co-incidence it was later learnt that this area used to home to a famous local hunter – also called Nsolo! Nsolo is also predominantly a walking camp. It is the favorite haunt of a group of old buffalo who spend most nights in or around camp. Day 6 - 8 Walk to Kakuli Camp Kakuli Bush Camp "Kakuli" is an old buffalo bull – this beautiful camp has five traditional walk-in safari tents each with en-suite bathrooms made from natural materials. The bar and dining chitenje is constructed of reed and thatch forming the centre point of camp. This building along with each of the tents is on an elevated stretch of river bank overlooking a wide grazing lawn that follows the Luangwa River until it meets the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. The views from Kakuli are spectacular. Kakuli is a great camp for both walking and game drives. Day 8 - 10 Walk/drive to Mchenja Camp Mchenja Camp Set in a grove of magnificent ebony trees - Mchenja Bush Camp is a luxurious, elegant and stylish tented camp overlooking a huge sweeping bend in the Luangwa. Each of the five specially designed octagonal tents have their own private en-suite open air bathroom plus free standing, Victorian style baths with a river view. The beautiful central chitenje is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees and guests can cool off there in the camp’s plunge pool. The above is just a suggestion - we can be very flexible with the order of camps and the activities you chose.
